How it develops
Italian mandarin and black pepper give a brief civilised opening, and it really is brief. Almost immediately the leather arrives with isobutyl quinoline behind it — the material that makes leather smell like a tannery rather than a jacket — joined by cade oil's charred, tarry smoke and a genuinely animalic warmth. Incense keeps it austere through the middle. Only in the late drydown do styrax, labdanum, vanilla and cedar arrive to civilise it, and even then only partly.
