How it develops
The opening is deliberately strange: a glossy, solvent-bright rush of ink and vinyl cut with black pepper and a boozy rum sweetness, more object than flower. That gloss dulls as ebony wood takes over, dark and dry, with elemi adding resin and apricot and peony supplying just enough softness to keep it from turning industrial. The end is olibanum and amber resin, smoky and polished, a lacquered wood surface rather than a warm hug.

How others read it
Praise
Praised by fans of dark resinous, incense-like, smoky woody, and unusual modern Tom Ford profiles. Official Tom Ford page notes Black Lacquer as a Fragrance Foundation Awards winner for Fragrance of the Year - Universal Luxury.Criticism
Can read strange, synthetic, vinyl-like, smoky, bitter, or resin-heavy rather than easy mass-appeal. Because it is a newer release, consensus is less settled than older Tom Ford staples.Comparison notes
ALT Noir Varnish closely mirrors the Fragrantica-style pyramid with black pepper, rum, dark vinyl, ebony wood, peony, apricot, and olibanum/amber resin language. Official Tom Ford uses more proprietary note names: black lacquer accord, Makassar ebony wood ScentTrek™, vinyl accord, dark peony, olibanum, and cedarwood Atlas NeoAbsolut™.Discovery
